Papa’s Beef

Meat on a stick is a beautiful thing. Whether it’s corn batter dredged and fried hotdogs or Moroccan spiced minced beef hugging against cedar, the wooden skewer is a top tier meat delivery device.

Even the downsides to consuming food this way have their charms. The subtle jolt you get from stabbing your throat trying for that last bite, the smearing of sauce and grease on the corners of your mouth when going corn on the cob style, or the strain in your thumb and two first fingers while you converse with friends between bites. It’s all as much a part of the experience as those few minutes of agonizing excitement while you watch those proteinated columns turning over flames.

At Papa’s Beef they do the best meat stick I’ve had in Chiang Mai thus far. It’s made from little nodules of beautifully marbled Charolais beef. And just like all the other French foods I have a difficult time reading, let alone pronouncing, it’s of a high quality and flavor. They are cooked to a doneness of your choice and brushed with a dark thick sauce that reminds me of French Onion Soup, the flavor of mushrooms cooked on pizza, and a good Seattle teriyaki sauce; styrofoam box not included. I guess what I’m trying to say is that they are umami flavor bombs.

You can find this stand, once it gets dark, on the northish end of Nimman road just south of the Tesco express. Look for the picture of a French flag on an unassuming stand, or just follow that good smell.

Each stick will run 25 baht. You should expect to want at least two.
